Talib Kweli took a stroll through the Midwest to Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI last night and I was there upfront and center. Yes. Hip hop can exist even at my medium-sized, minimally diversified university in smaller-than-Chicago-sized city of Milwaukee, cheesehead Wisconsin. It was a pretty hype performance despite the relatively small crowd. But the intimate setting was refreshing -- something the guy standing next to me wasn't. Kweli admitted to his initial lack of excitement in putting on a show at MU, but he ate his words, as the small crowd consisted of some big fans.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I've never been to a Talib Kweli show before and my knowledge of his music career appears to be minimal so by no means am I a Talib Kweli expert. But I do know his reputation for his socially conscious and sometimes political lyrics. Whether it was his intention or not, I found it slightly shocking, yet oddly appropriate for Talib to end his song 'Hell' by addressing the unnecessary religious discrimination that exists within our society (at my Jesuit university by the way). It definitely gave him credibility in my book: that he puts his fame to good use, even if it is in a small way. Thumbs up to going to a Talib Kweli show hopefully near you. -baroke victoria currently listening to: talib kweli - eat to live | |
